Learning Objectives

  • Students should be able to describe the changes in the type of epithelium throughout the respiratory system.
  • Students should be able to explain how the structure of different segments of the respiratory airways reflect the functional roles that these airways play in air movement and gas exchange.
  • Students should be able to distinguish in histological images the trachea, bronchi, terminal bronchioles, bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli.
  • Students should be able to identify in histological images the different types of pneumocytes and their function.
  • Students should be able to describe how the structures in the alveoli control ventilation in the lung.
  • Students should be able to describe the response of the respiratory system to particles inhaled with air.
