Optic Nerve

The optic disc is where axons of the afferent optic nerve fibers converge to form the optic nerve. The axons are not myelinated as the move along the retina because myelination would interfere with light passing through the retina to the photoreceptors. As the axons enter the optic disc, they become myelinated.
