Bronchial Pneumonia

In bronchial pneumonia, there is an infiltration of neutrophils into the airway lumen in response to the presence of large numbers of bacteria. The inflammatory response leads to the filling of the lumen with an exudate. This process, by which airspace is replaced with fluid, is called consolidation. With severe untreated infection, the inflammation can cause the destruction or restructuring of the alveolar walls.
