Lens

This is a high power view of the lens. At the surface of the lens is a layer of lens capsule that is equivalent to an epithelial basement membrane. Right underneath the capsule is the lens epithelium, which only covers the anterolateral parts of the lens. Lens fiber cells constitute the rest of the lens. Developing lens fiber cells still contain their nuclei. Over time, however, they form thin and elongated cells without nuclei. Their cytoplasm will be filled with crystalline protein.
