Fovea

The fovea is the region with the most acute vision in the retina. It is easily identified by the depression within the retina. The fovea is on the visual axis of the cornea. In addition, there are fewer barrier layers between the photoreceptors and the vitreal body (hence the appearance of a depression). The photoreceptors at the fovea are tightly packed and are almost exclusively cones. All of these factors contribute to the high acuity of the fovea.
