Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s is another neurodegenerative disease in which there is a substantial loss of the neurons of the susbtantia nigra. These neurons produce dopamine and are important for planning and correcting movements. The main histological feature of Parkinson’s Disease is the Lewy Body, a cytoplasmic aggregate of proteins that appears eosinophilic, round, and elongated. Note the presence of macrophages with pigmented material. These represent sites of neurodegeneration.
