Gastro-Esophageal Junction

The gastro-esophageal junction is notable because of the epithelial transition that takes place there. At this point, there is a shift from the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus to the simple columnar epithelium of the stomach. Damage to the esophageal epithelium can cause metaplasia of these cells, known as Barrett's Esophagus. This will be discussed in detail in the Pathological Examples.
