When cut transversely, cilia display the classic 9 + 2 microtubule structure (nine peripheral doublets plus a central pair). How is motility generated in cilia?
Answer: Dynein motors, which hare bound to the outer doublets of microtubules, generates force to slide the outer microtubules relative to each other. This sliding causes the cilium to bend.
