Sinusoid EM

This electron micrograph shows a segment of a liver lobule and sinusoid. Begin by identifying the hepatocytes that are the predominant cells in the liver. These cells are bathed in blood from the sinusoids. The sinusoids have a discontinuous endothelium. This means that the sinusoidal endothelial cells do not have a continuous basement membrane; they are separated from the hepatocytes by an area known as the space of Disse. What functional role does the discontinuous endothelium serve in the liver sinusoids?
Answer: It allows maximal contact between the blood and the hepatocytes, which absorb materials from it and secrete materials into it.
