Erythrocytes EM

An image from a scanning electron microscope shows the biconcave shape of erythrocytes. This shape allows red blood cells to bend and deform so that they can traverse tiny capillaries. After 120 days, erythrocytes tend to lose their shape and are removed from the blood by the spleen.
